Named after Grenville M. Dodge, an army officer, congressman and one of the founders of the famous breakfast cereal maker General Mills Corporation, Dodge City is a modern metropolitan with over 25,000 people.
During the late years of the 19th century Dodge City was a cattle trade boomtown. Lawlessness and gunfights followed the herds of cattle, creating the archetype of what was later called 'the wild west'. The main visitor attractions in Dodge City are related to those wild times.
The main point of interest, located in downtown is the Boot Hill Museum. It is a western history village museum located on the site of Boot Hill Cemetery. Summer daytime entertainment includes, stagecoach rides through downtown Dodge City and gunfight re-enactments. Other period attractions include Gunfighters Wax museum and the Marchel Ranch Wild West Show.
Other notable attractions include Carnegie Arts Center, Dodge City Raceway Park and the Wright Park Zoo, which is home to longhorn cattle, Buffalo, Black Bears and a Siberian Tiger.
