Located about 40 miles west of downtown Kansas City and 25 miles east of Topeka, Lawrence is a historic college town that is home to the University of Kansas (KU). It is also home to Haskell Indian Nations University, the only inter-tribal university for Native Americans.
Founded in 1864, the KU campus, which spans across 950 acres atop historic Mount Oread is the town's focal point. The historic downtown has a cosmopolitan atmosphere and during the school year its shops and cafes are alive with activity.
Major points of interest in and around Lawrence include the University of Kansas Natural History Museum, the Museum of Anthropology, the Spencer Museum of Art and Clinton State Park.
